In researching the life of my grandfather who lived in Ephraim, I ran across an interesting line written by his wife (my grandmother.) She wrote the following: "After a while he was able to go to the [Manti] temple to do endowments for the dead, for other people, getting 25 cents per name, for one whole winter." I was stunned to read this and I wondered if her memory was inaccurate or if she was referring to the 25 cents being earned some other way or WAS there actually a time when the LDS church paid members to perform ordinance work for the dead. Any reliable historians out there ever come across this in your research?
Thanks much.
